New Horizons Boys Ranch addresses many social challenges and problems of our day including: adoptive family issues; divorced family issues; poor academic achievement; single parent issues; along with many others.
Operating year-round for nearly 20 years, New Horizons Boys Ranch is currently serving up to 20 boys, emphasizing concern for assisting and helping the entire family. Residents often come with little ability to achieve academically, build meaningful relationships, control impulses, or form responsible moral codes.
The focus and intention of New Horizons Boys Ranch is primarily on character development and family reunification.
The dimensions of our treatment include:
Educational: Classes are held on the Ranch. A nine (9) month traditional classroom approach is used. The summer offers one (1) full credit in “Outdoor Education”, and field trips make use of community resources.
Emotional: Our staff provides a healing environment for the youth.
Therapy: We offer clinical, spiritual and group therapy on a continual basis as an important element of our program.
Recreational: Program activities offered include fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting and swimming. Our location provides excellent opportunity for involvement in backpacking, camping and hiking with daylight hours in the summer months extending until 10pm mountain time.
Social: Anti-social behaviors are addressed generally through our highly structured Relational/Behavioral/Consequential treatment program. Building social relationship based on character development is stressed.
Spiritual: A Biblical philosophy is fostered for residents to integrate into their personal value system, which provides a foundation for present and future family relationships.
Vocational: Residents have options in automotive, construction, culinary, life skills, and ranching. Residents are aided in the discovery of their aptitudes and given work experience opportunities. A strong work ethic is modeled and taught.
The boys enjoys a wide variety of activities, from camping and rock climbing to horseback riding and fishing.
Hiking – The boys go to Helmer Mountain, Kootenai National Forest, and Glacier Park. While hiking the boys are taught about the history behind the parks as well as the nature around them.
Hunter/Safety Courses – The boys take these courses to teach them the right and safe way to hunt. These courses teach them self-discipline and allow them to partake in fun activities.
Fishing – The boys fish in the many lakes and creeks around the ranch. The boys go to the local fish hatchery to learn what kind of fish are in the lakes and how they are grown and released back into the wild.
Camping – The boys go camping several times a year. The camping trips can last anywhere from a couple of days to over a week. While camping, the boys go swimming, fishing, go on nature walks, cook over fires, and have devotions.
Equine – At the ranch the boys learn how to work with horses, groom them, and take care of them. The boys learn how to work with the horses and the horses teach them too, since horses act as mirrors and reflect the boys attitudes right back to them. If they approach a horse with anger or disrespect, the horse will do the same to them. It is a wonderful therapeutic experience for the boys to understand how their actions are being picked up and affecting those around them.
The services provided to achieve these treatment goals include:
Domestic Services: Nutritional needs are met with well-prepared and balanced meals. Laundry services are also provided for each resident. Resident involvement in both areas may be expected.
Family Services: This includes family, group and individual counseling with the purpose of addressing challenges and issues that have affected the family. All family members must be involved in order to accomplish greater family cohesion and reunification.
Youth Services: Our front-line staff provides 24-hour supervision of our residents. They demonstrate Christ-centered lives and are personally involved in the resident’s daily life.
