Our school works hard to develop academic, emotional, spiritual, and physical fitness by instilling discipline and helping them to rebuild relationships. Teens attend New Horizons Boys Ranch from across the country, including from Ames, Iowa, and often find it valuable to experience a new environment away from local peer groups.
Our therapeutic boarding school is a Christian residential school focused on character development and family restoration. We provide services to 20 boys in a home-like atmosphere where troubled adolescents adopt more positive life attitudes, flourish in their faith, experience a safe and nurturing environment, and overcome their challenges and problems. We offset hard work with engaging recreation including fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting and swimming. Our picturesque mountainous location provides excellent opportunity for backpacking, camping and hiking.
Each adolescent begins by establishing trust with an adult mentor. Strenuous activities and daily chores build a solid work ethic and countless other desirable character qualities. Then, framed by a relationship with a mentor, the child can overcome the destructive choices that had caused the need for intervention. We also use individual and group counseling to improve attitudes and behaviors.
Residents at New Horizons Boys Ranch are provided a fully accredited school that also uses independent study courses. All credits received transfer easily to any other school. The self-paced quality of the coursework suits our students well, permitting them to learn in the way they find best and catch up on any missed credits. We believe discipline plays a key role in any productive education, and we communicate this in our classroom. In addition, vocational training topics include automotive, construction, culinary, life skills, and ranching.
Genuine family restoration happens only with the total commitment of parents. We require parents to attend three family workshops per year for coaching, family therapy and to visit their child at our facility. We facilitate frequent contact between parents and adolescents using tools such as letter writing, which promotes communication and strengthens relationships without the emotional charge of face-to-face interaction.
NHBR is a Christ-centered program that guides adolescents to find their place in life. Through mentorship, therapy, hard work and plenty of play, we teach values and character traits that will serve your child all of his or her life. Please think about looking outside of Ames, Iowa to see how our caring program can lead to restoration in your family.
