Our school works hard to promote academic, emotional, spiritual, and physical fitness by teaching discipline and helping them to rebuild relationships. Teens attend New Horizons Boys Ranch from across the country, including from Des Moines, Iowa, and often find it valuable to spend time in a new environment separate from local peer groups.
Our therapeutic boarding school is a faith-based residential school with a mission for character development and family unity. We provide services to 20 boys in a home-like environment where troubled adolescents adopt constructive life attitudes, grow in their faith, live in a safe and nurturing environment, and triumph over their challenges and problems. We balance hard work with engaging recreation including fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting and swimming. Our picturesque mountainous location has much to offer in backpacking, camping and hiking.
Every teen begins by forming trust with an adult mentor. Engaging activities and daily chores foster a solid work ethic and countless other positive character qualities. Then, framed by a relationship with a mentor, the adolescent can overcome the destructive choices that had held him or her back. We also provide individual and group counseling to improve attitudes and behaviors.
Students at New Horizons Boys Ranch are provided a fully accredited school that also uses independent study courses. All credits earned transfer easily to any other school. The self-paced quality of the coursework suits our students well, allowing them to learn as they do best and catch up on any missed credits. We believe discipline plays a key part in any successful education, and we communicate this in our classroom. In addition, vocational training topics include automotive, construction, culinary, life skills, and ranching.
Genuine family restoration happens only with the full cooperation of parents. We ask parents to attend three family workshops each year for coaching, family therapy and to visit their child at our facility. We support frequent contact between parents and teens using tools such as letter writing, which promotes communication and strengthens relationships without the emotional charge of face-to-face interaction.
NHBR is a faith-based youth ranch that guides adolescents to find their place in life.
