Our school works hard to encourage academic, emotional, spiritual, and physical fitness by instilling discipline and helping them to rebuild relationships. Teens arrive at New Horizons Boys Ranch from across the nation, including from Muscatine, Iowa, and often find it valuable to experience a new environment away from local peer groups.
Our therapeutic boarding school is a Christian residential school focused on character development and family restoration. We provide treatment to 20 boys in a home-like atmosphere where troubled adolescents adopt better life attitudes, grow in their faith, live in a safe and nurturing environment, and conquer their challenges and problems. We offset hard work with inviting recreation including fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting and swimming. Our beautiful mountainous location provides excellent opportunity for backpacking, camping and hiking.
Every teen begins by building trust with an adult mentor. Engaging activities and daily chores contribute to a strong work ethic and countless other positive character qualities. Then, framed by a relationship with a mentor, the teen can tackle the destructive choices that had held him or her back. We also offer individual and group counseling to improve attitudes and behaviors.
Students at New Horizons Boys Ranch are provided a fully accredited school that also uses independent study courses. All credits accumulated transfer easily to any other school. The self-paced quality of the coursework suits our students well, making it possible for them to learn in the way they find best and catch up on any missed credits. We believe discipline plays a key role in any worthwhile education, and we communicate this in our classroom. Additionally, vocational training topics include automotive, construction, culinary, life skills, and ranching.
True family restoration happens only with the full cooperation of parents. We ask parents to attend three family workshops each year for coaching, family therapy and to visit their teen on our campus. We facilitate frequent contact between parents and adolescents using tools such as letter writing, which promotes communication and strengthens relationships without the emotional charge of face-to-face contact.
NHBR is a faith-based program that leads adolescents to find their place in life. Through mentorship, counseling, hard work and plenty of play, we stand by values and character traits that will serve your child all of his or her life.
