New Horizons Boys Ranch works hard to develop academic, emotional, spiritual, and physical fitness by instilling discipline and mentoring them to rebuild relationships. Teens come to New Horizons Boys Ranch from across the nation, including from Ottumwa, Iowa, and often find it valuable to spend time in a new environment detached from local peer groups.
Our therapeutic boarding school is a faith-based residential program with a heart for character development and family renewal. We provide services to 20 boys in a home-like environment where troubled adolescents take on more positive life attitudes, grow in their belief, live in a safe and nurturing environment, and conquer their challenges and problems. We balance hard work with engaging recreation including fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting and swimming. Our gorgeous mountainous location is a great place for backpacking, camping and hiking.
Every adolescent begins by building trust with an adult mentor. Challenging activities and daily chores foster a strong work ethic and countless other positive character qualities. Then, in context of a relationship with a mentor, the adolescent can overcome the conflicts that had caused the need for intervention. We also use individual and group counseling to improve attitudes and behaviors.
Students at New Horizons Boys Ranch are provided a fully accredited school that also offers independent study courses. All credits earned transfer easily to any other school. The self-paced nature of the coursework suits our students well, making it possible for them to learn as they do best and catch up on any missed credits. We believe discipline plays a key role in any successful education, and we convey this in our classroom. Additionally, vocational training topics include automotive, construction, culinary, life skills, and ranching.
Genuine family restoration happens only with the full cooperation of parents. We request parents to attend three family workshops per year for coaching, family therapy and to visit their teen on our campus. We facilitate frequent contact between parents and teens using tools such as letter writing, which strengthens communication and strengthens relationships without the emotional charge of face-to-face interaction.
NHBR is a Christ-centered program that leads adolescents to find their place in life. Through mentorship, counseling, hard work and plenty of play, we teach values and character traits that will serve your child all of his or her life.
